The film Titanic cost far more to make than the real ship did to build.

The White Star Line’s RMS Titanic was completed in 1912 at a cost of roughly $7.5 million. James Cameron’s film about the disaster was made 85 years later for a reported $200 million, briefly making it the most expensive film ever produced.

The comparison is usually quoted with the unadjusted figures, where the movie’s budget dwarfs the ship’s. Adjusted for inflation the gap narrows, but the film still comes out ahead — a neat illustration of the scale of modern blockbuster filmmaking.
