Books, words, and the people who wrote them.

Shakespeare gets credit for hundreds of English words with no earlier trace. Dictionaries date words and phrases like "eyeball" and "bedroom" to his plays simply because no earlier written use of them survives — evidence of how well his work was preserved, not necessarily proof he coined them himself.
