When Apple showed a small group of outside writers an early iPod prototype in 2001, copywriter Vinnie Chieco was reminded of the white spaceship in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and the recurring line “Open the pod bay doors, HAL.” The white device, he suggested, was a kind of pod — hence iPod.

Apple paired the name with the slogan “1,000 songs in your pocket,” and it went on to be used across an entire product line for more than two decades.
